he question may be subjective: ‘can i carry a BB gun in your car?’ as it depends on the country or state you are settled in. Altogether, when it comes to transporting weapons that can be done under exceptional circumstances concerning the law.
Can you carry a BB gun in your car? Some countries treat weapons such as BB, paintball, airsoft, and other lowered powered ones as legal to be carried around, but some states treat them as harmful as other firearms. However, even if it’s legal, I would not advise you to carry BB gun in your car, we will discuss that below, why?
If you are thinking of carrying a firearm, you must first check your state gun control laws.
What if it’s legal in your country?
You may have heard that it’s still not a good idea to carry BB guns while driving, well it’s real and for reasons.
In some countries, it might be legal to have a loaded gun sitting on your passenger seat while driving, but it’s still a bad idea to do so. BB guns look a lot like standard guns, so one might assume that you are carrying a real weapon considering you a threat. An officer might stop you for a license check, and then after seeing a loaded gun lying around, he might get scared. And then if he shoots you as an act of self-defense that might also be considered ‘legal.’
Let’s say you have a permit even for carrying a BB gun, and you take your hands slowly to the pocket to show the officer, concealed carry permit. He or she might assume that you are taking out a weapon based on their previous observation about carrying a firearm. The next thing could be you getting shot trying to take out papers from your pocket!
What should you do in such a situation?
Suppose you considered it safe to carry a BB gun while driving due to some reason, and now you get pulled over by an officer. The safest thing to do now is to get your hands up and show the officer that you are not a threat. After that, explain to him that you are not carrying a threatening gun.
Let’s take an example from the internet about how bad it could be to carry a BB gun in your car.
Alex MacDonald, Pharmacy Technician, wrote on Sep 20, 2019 (on quora) that he went to Walmart to buy ammo for his airsoft gun, but while he went, he left his gun next to the driving seat. When he was driving back, he realized that about 12 squad cars and more officers were behind him armed. Later, when he went to make a turn, he realized that they were chasing him. Now I don’t know if he is exaggerating here, but he further writes that they even blocked the entrance off ahead.
Finally, the cops pulled him over and started yelling at him where the gun was. Of course, the guy was confused because he had his head down and a gun pointing at its head. The cops found his airsoft gun and later told him that one of the concerning citizens saw your gun and assumed you were a gangster. He or she then reported to the police. Alex later writes that the whole fuss could have been avoided if he had put the gun in his glove compartment.
There are other examples on the internet about such confusion leading to massacres; in some cases, people also getting killed!
Carrying a BB gun for self-defense
If you are considering an airsoft gun for self-defense, then you should rethink what you are thinking. To threaten someone with a low powered weapon would be the same as bullying someone with an authentic gun. You cannot defend yourself later in the court that you were threatening with an airsoft gun, you can still be charged to kill.
What if I pull it in front of a criminal
Imagine a scenario in which you are pulling out a BB gun for self-defense, and the criminal pulls out a real weapon, i.e., you are dead. Also, if you are lucky enough and the criminal does not have a gun. Still, you cannot do much harm with an airsoft gun.
An airsoft gun typically deals six foot-pounds of muzzle energy while a 45 ACP round generally generates about 460 to 600 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. The only self-defense you will be able to do with a BB gun is if you have a precise target and hit the victim’s eye. This will give you some time to run away. Also, I recommend other self-defense things, such as the popular pepper spray, as it would give you more success to run away.
The safest way to carry a BB gun in your car
It would be best if you had the BB gun for target practice, hunting, or taking your arm for fun use to home after buying. It will help if you put your gun in a closed box out of your reach (unloaded)
Like few states allow the transportation of firearms if and only if;
- Weapons are unloaded
- Locked in a trunk or some sealed box out of reach
- You still need a permit for this kind of transportation (if in large number)
We can conclude by saying that it is the safest and smartest idea to carry a BB gun in your car even if it is legal in your country. The weapon is a weapon no matter how dangerous it is. Don’t even think to fool someone with your airsoft gun as a real gun, even if you are playing a joke. You could end up getting arrested or killed!
