Although these guns might look the same, they are very much different from each other. Most importantly, their ammunition is different, and so of course, their purpose for which they were made.
Is a pellet gun the same as a bb gun? No pellet guns are not the same as bb guns because bb guns use leads as ammo, which are usually 4.5mm (.177 caliber), whereas the pellet guns can use ammo as large as 50 calibers for hunting purposes.
As the ammunition is different hence the weight, accuracy, magazine, and recoil becomes different too.
What is a pellet gun?
Pellet guns usually come in pistols and rifles. They use non-spherical metallic pellets to shoot via compressed air. They travel long distances and could be used for hunting. Although most of the pellet guns are fired from compressed air, i.e., a little amount of co2 is compressed and decompresses to shoot pellets every time you press the trigger.
However, these guns also come in the standard spring system where you load the spring and press the trigger to release it.
What are BB guns?
BB guns shoot smalls pieces of leads, usually .177 calibers. They are cheaper and safer to use hence could be used for the purpose of target practicing. They use round bullets that travel a fair amount of distances with a little firepower. They also use both air and spring systems like the pellet guns.
There is another type of bb gun that uses plastic balls instead of the metals ones. These can even be used to play shooting games with your friends; They are many clubs around the world where people play with these, like the paintball games.
However, it is strictly advised to check for the firepower limit of your bb gun before you attend to shoot anyone with it.
What is the difference between a BB gun and a pellet gun?
There are plenty of differences between the two guns that we will discuss below. Let’s start with the price point.
Which is cheaper, bb gun or a pellet gun?
Not only the bb gun itself is cheaper, but the ammunition is also cheap. If you are looking to fire bullets at a random cardboard sheet, then don’t spend your money on a pellet gun. BB guns are easier to master; hence if you are buying for the first time, then try a bb before a pellet.
Difference between barrel rifling
The ammo of pellets usually needs a spin before coming out of the mouth of the rifle. This keeps the pellets straight and more effective while hitting the target. While on the other hand, there is no such spinning effect added to the round leads in bb guns.
This may be a reason behind the shorter distances and less accuracy observed in bb guns. This is also the reason for less air friction on pellets despite having more surface area than the small metallic leads.
Difference between Magazine
Lead pellets use a different type of magazine, from bb guns. Pellet guns use a rotator type of magazine where you can reload from either side, whereas the bb guns use more of a standard kind refilling magazine.
Also, you will find less ammunition support in pellet gun than the bb guns because bb guns can stack several small lead bullets at a time.
Which is better for target practicing?
It depends on what kind of target practicing, you intend to do. If you are young and want to practice targets for short-range, then you can opt for a bb gun, but if you wish to practice targets at a longer range, then pellet ones are better.
Pellet guns travel at a more extended range than the bb guns, while bb guns will undoubtedly slow down faster as they are shot. Pellet guns are also way more accurate because of the shape they are made.

Which is better for hunting a bb gun or a pellet gun?
Hunting with a bb gun is not a good idea because of many reasons. They are not accurate, and most of all, they are not at all powerful enough to kill an animal. You will just wound the animal, which would be a cruel thing to do. BB gun could kill insects like lizards and maybe rats if you are lucky.
Pellet guns, on the other hand, could be used for the purpose of hunting. But be sure to check out for caliber restriction in your state for hunting. A .22 caliber pellet gun could be used, which will surely kill a squirrel.
Will bb gun kill a squirrel?
You could kill a squirrel with a bb gun, but that doesn’t mean you should because bb guns are reliably weak, and could leave the squirrel injured rather than killing it. Also, at longer distances and less accuracy, there would be a major chance that you will miss your shot. Also, the penetrating power of bb leads is less than pellets, so use that instead.
Can you kill a deer with a pellet gun?
No, you cannot kill a deer with a .177 calibers pellet rifle, but you could with a higher power one. Many people may disagree with this, but factors such as your distance from the target, your aim play’s an important role.
Anyhow its best to use .22 calibers or above for hunting purposes. The 50 calibers pellet guns (not very common) could also take down large animals, so would be considered as best for hunting.
Which gun is more suitable for beginners, bb or pellet gun?
It depends upon many factors because both of the guns are made for different purposes. It does not matter if you are a beginner or not because both of these guns are not like the real ones and somewhat made for training exercises. However, the following factors may decide which one you should opt for if you are a beginner?
- Age; A beginner could be in all kinds of age. So what’s your age when you are opting for one of these guns? If you are in a teenage, then you should go with a bb gun, or you could even go with pellet, but if you are below sixteen, then I would not recommend buying a pellet gun at all.
- What use are you buying for; Now this is an important factor, if you want a gun to play within your house, like shooting at some closer targets then you should buy a bb gun. Also, the reloading of the mag and the feel of bb gun is more like a real one, so that would be good if you want a realistic feel while playing.
But if you are serious with your shooting and you want to use it for hunting later, then you should spend your extra bucks and buy a pellet gun.
